Oppo Find X Review
OPPO’s flagship Find X is one of the most futuristic smartphones we’ve seen in years. It combines a notch-less display with a motorized camera panel to create an incredibly appealing and truly slick design.
We’ve seen other phones with similar features, such as Vivo’s NEX, but the Find X stands out from the crowd thanks to its design. It’s a genuinely unique smartphone that we can’t recommend enough.
The design
The Oppo Find X is one of the most unique smartphones I’ve ever seen. It’s a notch-less smartphone that hides the camera in a module that slides up and down.
The motorized camera module is a stunning hardware component, but it’s also not as sturdy as expected. Tech YouTuber JerryRigEverything did a bend test on the Find X, cracking it quickly and proving it can’t withstand a severe fall.
As for the camera setup, it’s a 16MP primary sensor with an f/2.0 lens, optical image stabilization, and phase-detect autofocus, and a secondary 20MP, f/2.0 selfie cam. It also has an asymmetric camera island with a gradual rise that blends more seamlessly with the back than the usual rectangular or square islands.
But the Find X isn’t just a beautiful piece of hardware; it also ships with Android Oreo under Oppo’s ColorOS 12 software. As a result, it’s a heavily customized look that doesn’t feel like Google intended, and it takes some getting used to.
The screen
One of the highlights of the Oppo Find X is the screen that stretches from top to bottom without a notch or any bezels. Instead, it’s a 6.4-inch display with a slender 19.5:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution.
Instead of a traditional notch, the Oppo Find X uses a motorized case section that pops up from the top edge within half a second and slides back as quickly. It protects the front camera, dual sensors, and face unlock mechanism from damage while reducing the display’s bezels.
The screen on the Find X is excellent, rendering colors with rich vibrancy and attractive contrast. However, it’s not the pretty pixel-packed image that other phones with a similar display offer.
The software on Find X is also slightly different than you might be used to. OPPO’s ColorOS runs on Android 8.1 Oreo, but the extreme customization makes for a user interface that’s more iOS than Google’s default operating system.
The performance
The Oppo Find X is an exciting smartphone that stands out. Its unique slide-out camera panel and jaw-dropping bezel-less display combine to create a phone that looks like a work of art.
The Find X is a big step forward for mobile design but has flaws. One of the biggest concerns is how well it will withstand everyday use.
In our tests, Find X easily handled general tasks and multitasking. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and Adreno 630 GPU are up to the study, as is a large amount of RAM.
The Find X also comes with ColorOS, which offers an Android experience. It aggressively manages memory and reallocates resources to optimize gameplay.
The battery life
The Oppo Find X is the latest smartphone from one of China’s top mobile manufacturers and one of the most eye-catching phones of 2018. It’s got an almost bezel-less screen, an extremely excellent pop-up camera mechanism, and a unique rear glass panel that makes it stand out.
It also packs a flagship chip from Qualcomm so that you can expect exceptional performance in all your most demanding tasks, including games and multimedia playback. And it has plenty of RAM, too.
However, this is an OPPO, not a Google phone, and it runs its proprietary blend of Android called ColorOS that brings in its own set of bloatware apps. That’s not a bad thing, as it means you get all of the usual iOS-style things like drawer-less home screens and gesture-based navigation, but it also suggests you may run into some unexpected slowdowns.
The 3730mAh battery isn’t the most powerful in the world, but it’s still enough to keep you going through the day and then some. And thanks to VOOC fast charging, it gets back to complete in an hour and a half.
